Botox/Dysport FAQs
What areas do Botox and Dysport treat?
Botox and Dysport are used to soften and prevent moderate to severe facial wrinkles such as “furrowed brow,” “crow’s feet,” “forehead lines,” or fine wrinkles in the upper lip.
How do Botox and Dysport work?
Botox is a short for “botulinum toxin.” Dysport is considered a “twin” to Botox and is also an injectable form of the same compound. When injected into small facial muscle groups, they block communication between nerves and muscles and prevents muscles from making repeated movements, such as frowning or squinting. Without the underlying muscle movement, your skin can relax, and wrinkles will disappear. Over several months, your body’s amazing ability to metabolize will reestablish communication. The muscles will begin to move the skin as before, and you’ll be ready for another treatment.
What does treatment feel like?
Botox and Dysport are administered by your provider through a series of injections to the areas you want to treat. Your provider may use an “energy bar” that has a small vibration to distract your nerves for comfort during the procedure. You will feel the injection, and you may have a slight burning sensation in the treatment area during the procedure.
What can I expect after the procedure?
You may experience redness at the injection site that will dissipate in 30 minutes. Applying a cold compress to the injection after the procedure will lessen these effects.
How long before I see results?
Depending on the severity of the wrinkle and the size of the muscle group, you may notice immediate results as your facial muscles relax. Most patients notice the greatest changes 14 days after treatment. These results typically last 3 to 4 months, at which time you’ll be ready for your next treatment.
Will I have to miss work?
You can return to your normal activities right away, though you will have redness for 30 minutes after the procedure. We do recommend avoiding any workouts the evening of your appointment.
Should I use Botox or Dysport?
Both products are excellent and have only slightly different indications. At your consultation, your provider can help you decide which is best for you based on your preferences, treatment area, and timeline.
